Executive Director's Message - July 2025

by Lisa Blair, WVSAC Executive Director
Senior Center 2025 Annual Meeting
The 2025 Annual Meeting was held on June 18.
I would like to begin this month’s message by saying thank you to all our members who attended our annual meeting. This is a very important meeting for the Senior Center. I know it takes extra time out of your day to attend, but it is so important to keep our fingers on the pulse of the needs and expectations of our membership and to meet a quorum for voting purposes (4% required votes from our active membership).  We talk about the important “housekeeping” issues such as explaining our current and projected budget and discussing our needs and expectations for the future. There is always a question-and-answer period towards the end of the meeting, which helps keep us engaged with our membership and gives everyone the opportunity to be involved. The annual meeting is also a time for us to elect new board members for the expiring or vacated seats. This year we say goodbye to Pam McGhee, our Chairman of the Board. She has faithfully served her full two-year term and we could not be more grateful for all she has done for the Senior Center. Not only has she given her time, but she has also shared her wisdom and knowledge with us over these past two years. She will continue to serve on the board as our past chairman, which includes voting rights for a minimum of one year.

Our newly elected Chairman of the Board is Jim Tarbert, who has served on the board for the past three years as Director “B”. His vacated position as Director “B” is being filled by the newly elected Jay Larson. We welcome both to the board in their new positions. Our remaining board members stay as they were last year and you will begin to know them better in the coming months as we feature each one of them in our Livewire.

If you check your email regularly, you will have noticed a little extra “spark” in it. Russ has started a new information avenue for membership as an addition to The Livewire. This arrives in your email in-box and is aptly named The Spark. You will find updates on events and important changes to our daily routine that need to get to the membership before the next Livewire is published. It’s important to say this is not a replacement for The Livewire. You can expect to receive that publication in your mailbox for years to come. If you are not receiving Spark emails, verify with someone in our office that we have your correct email address.

Speaking of Russ, I might as well bring up the subject of his new office again. Jay Larson and Keith Kirkpatrick, as well as Mike Norton have taken this project under their wing and it is nearing completion. As I am typing this, our resident interior designer/architect (Lydia) is picking up a can of what I can only assume is absolutely gorgeous paint. Okay, maybe that was a bit much, but Russ’ new office is going to look fantastic! I am so grateful to have such talented people in our membership. Their desire to share their abilities blesses us all. I do want to point out that his new office will be in a very central part of the building which may make it difficult for him to have quiet, uninterrupted time to do his work. The temptation may be there to “ask a quick question,” but I want to ask that we all (me included) respect his office space and adhere to his scheduled appointment times if you need tech help.

I am continuing to look for an instructor for our aerobics classes so they can resume again, but I have not been successful thus far. If you know of anyone who may be interested in teaching this class, please send them my way for further information. I know our members are missing this class and I’d like to resume it as soon as possible. Thank you everyone for keeping your ear to the ground.
By the time you receive this Livewire, the re-striping in our parking lot should be completed. The company doing the work was gracious enough to do this over the weekend and in the evenings to minimize the disruption to our members. This is just one of the scheduled updates, repairs and maintenance that our building requires. Please be patient as we work to keep our “home” in good working order. I know the exercise classes in the Social Hall had a challenging time late this spring when we had a total of four compressors fail in our heat pumps. This put quite a strain on the air conditioning and I know it got a little toasty in there. Thank you for hanging in there during this time. The units have been repaired and are now in good working order. We also have a company trying to work us into their schedule for repairs on the front corner sidewalk area of the building where the wheelchair ramp access is. Most construction-type businesses are extremely busy this time of year so until they can come out and do the work, I would like everyone to exercise caution on that corner so you don’t catch your shoes in the existing separation of cement and take a tumble.
Senior Center parking lot with new striping
The Senior Center parking lot has been freshly striped to start off the month of July.
We recently had a group of travelers return from Colorado. They experienced steam-powered trains and cog rail, viewed rock formations in the Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, and visited the tourist hot-spot of Vail. They had nine days of adventure and exciting experiences and made wonderful new friends in the process. Please consider our travel program for your next get-away. All commissions earned from our travel program are an important part of our operating budget, serving to keep our doors open and our members active. We have several upcoming trips that you will see as you read further into The Livewire and I would like to point out specifically the trip to Iceland to view the Northern Lights. This will prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I encourage you to consider it. August 4 is the deadline for deposits if you wish to have a confirmed space. Otherwise, it will be on a space-available basis after that. This is a trip that was prepared exclusively for the Senior Center and is limited to 20 people. This should prove to be an intimate experience catering to our specific needs. You can contact Lydia, our Program Director, to register or get more information.

The Senior Center has a full agenda for the remainder of the year and I’d like to share these events with you so you can keep your calendar updated:
  • August 16: End-of-Summer BBQ, complete with burgers, hot dogs, ice cream and entertainment.
  • September 20: Dueling Pianos. Think prime rib dinner and more music than you know what to do with.
  • October 13-17: Big Giving Week. This will be an annual event lasting a full week and culminating in a Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 18.
  • November 8: Craft Fair.
  • February 21: Tentative date for the Talent Show.
Okay, I feel like I have given you more information this month than you might want, so I’ll close with a simple reminder that the Senior Center and Second Chance Thrift Shop will close July 3 at 1:30 and remain closed until July 7 so that we can celebrate our national independence. Happy 4th of July everyone. Stay safe.

~Lisa
