Weekend dances have been a mainstay at the Wenatchee Valley Senior Activity Center since it opened over 30 years ago. While people attending these live music events have historically been from older generations, there are signs that these family-friendly events are being discovered by younger groups. When it comes to seeing the world later in life, many seniors find that group travel offers something extraordinary—something beyond just convenience or cost. It delivers connection, ease, and a sense of adventure that feels both safe and freeing. For older adults who may have spent decades putting others first—raising families, building careers, or caring for loved ones—group travel becomes a gift they give to themselves: a chance to explore, reconnect, and experience joy in a way that is both accessible and deeply rewarding. by Russ Alman, Communications Director Update: The Buzz is now on the air! Please visit this link for more information. Many of you are aware that I have an extensive background working with technology. Thanks to my father’s interest in amateur radio — he is KO8T and I am KZ8F — I was exposed to technology at 9 years old, a very early age for someone in my generation. My dad bought our first computer in 1981 (a TRS-80 Color Computer) and I’ve had access to a home computer ever since.

Jim Tarbert is currently our chairman of the board. Jim is a native to North Central Washington. He grew up on farms in Wenatchee, Manson and Okanogan. After graduating from Okanogan High School, he worked for the Okanogan County Engineers Office for about a year and half to raise money for college. He then headed to Cheney where he earned his degree from Eastern Washington University, working night shifts at Eastern State Hospital to pay for expenses. Thank you to everyone who attended our End of Summer BBQ! It was a fantastic success, and everyone had a great time. We welcomed over 120 attendees, and the place was packed! The Rusty Barbed Wire Boys wowed the crowd with their nearly nonstop performance—what a talented group! We’re so lucky to count them among our friends. There were giant outdoor games (played indoors!) like horseshoes, ring toss, and tic-tac-toe, to name a few. Kids as young as one and adults as old as—well, let’s just say there were adults—joined in the fun together. A group of our local Applarians stepped up as grill masters, serving up delicious hamburgers and hot dogs. We also enjoyed Debbie’s famous potato salad and wrapped up the day with ice cream sundaes for dessert. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this event a success—from board members and employees to our dedicated membership volunteers. What a wonderful way to say goodbye to summer
