Aldridge Honored with Heroes Banner

- by the Wenatchee Valley Senior Activity Center

Thanks to a sponsorship by his friends Gordon and Jan Dale, Robert (Bob) Aldridge has been honored with a Heroes Banner through a program organized by the Wenatchee Veterans Hall and the Wenatchee Downtown Association. The Dales and Aldridge are also members of the Wenatchee Valley Senior Activity Center.

The Heroes Banners project honors veterans and active service members by recognizing their service on a commemorative banner. The banners are displayed on light poles in downtown Wenatchee and East Wenatchee for the entire month of November. They are also displayed throughout the community at special events. At the conclusion of their display, the banners are given to the sponsor.

Jan sponsored a banner for Gordon, her husband, during a previous year. To pay it forward, the Dales decided to honor Aldridge with a banner this year. They surprised Aldridge with an unveiling at the Wenatchee Veterans Hall earlier in March.

Aldridge served his country during the 1950s. At the age of 19, he joined the U.S. Army. He served his country for 6 years and received an honorable discharge.

During his service, he was stationed in Germany and acted as an aircraft mechanic in the 593rd Field Artillery Battalion, stationed at Babenhausen Kaserne. (Bob refers to this location as "Bootygun.") While there, he received the Army of Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

After three years in Germany, Aldridge returned to the United States to complete his final three years of service.

For more information on the Heroes Banner program, contact the Wenatchee Downtown Association at (509) 662-0059 or visit downtownwenatchee.org/heroes-banners.

quilt donated by Washington Quilt Guild
We have become the honored recipients of a beautiful quilt created by the North Central Washington Quilt Guild. Raffle tickets will be available at reception for $5 each. You may purchase as many as you like, as often as you like to increase your chances of being drawn. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own this beautiful handmade quilt. It will be on display until Friday, June 27, at which time we will draw the winner during lunch. Thank you, North Central Washington Quilt Guild, for your generous donation.
I was approached by Russ, our Director of Communications and Development, in the hall recently and he commented on the atmosphere in the Senior Center that day. He said he could feel how different the interactions among members were and sensed a change in the “air.” Everyone seemed to be smiling and enjoying the camaraderie and there was just a general overall happiness. And I felt it, too. Things just seemed to be more vibrant and alive. And that, my friends, is how spring started at the Senior Center this year!

Travel Corner: Dust Off That Bucket List!

travel presentation scheduled for March 14, 2025
by Lydia Agidius, Program Director
The past several weeks, I’ve felt an undeniable pull to reconnect with a part of myself that I thought was lost in the swirl of family life and the ever-demanding rhythm of daily routines. It’s as if a part of me, the adventurous spirit I once knew so well, is calling me back from the quiet corners of my mind. I was once the free-spirited traveler, a woman who would throw a suitcase together at the drop of a hat and jet off to discover new corners of the world — savoring croissants at a café in Paris, wandering the lively streets of Dublin under the soft glow of streetlamps or chasing the golden hour across the rooftops of Rome

dog playing with woman in a field
by Jim Oddie
At a picnic table in a park-like campground near the small desert town of Anza, California, I sat composing on my laptop. A warm sun shone from the blue cloudless sky about, so I welcomed the cool breeze under the shade of a tree.

Deep in thought, I heard a female voice say, “Here, Dogie.”

Kitchen staff member Debbie Schwaberow (right) and volunteers serve lunch to about 60 people on Feb. 14. Executive Director Lisa Blair was able to negotiate special pricing with Little Caesars for the center’s monthly Pizza Day.
Due to creative thinking by our executive director and the hard work of our kitchen staff and volunteers, our Senior Nutrition Program is in the midst of a dramatic turnaround.

Senior Tech Tip: Results About You: How To Remove Yourself from Public Search Sites

Results About You tool from Google
Google's Results About You tool allows you to track your personal information and have it removed from many common public directory services.
By Russ Alman, Communications Director
One of the disturbing things about the internet is information about you is collected by a variety of information aggregators and shared on public information sites. This information is collected through a variety of legitimate sources, including public records documents and combined with information you share on social media to create a profile about you. Then these public search sites display the collected information for the entire world to see. Their goal is typically to upsell website visitors to view more complete information (like current phone numbers and complete addresses) and even offer background checks for a small fee. (Yes, anyone can do a background check on anyone on the internet!)
